Ms Abineri's 2018-19 Year 1 Class

Welcome to the summer term in Year 1. We have a lot of exciting learning planned. Here is a selection of our upcoming activities.

Our first topic this term will be Plants and Farming. This topic will include our Geography, History and Science learning and will link to our writing. We will frequently learn outdoors around the school grounds and with real plants; investigating flowers, tress, fruits, vegetables, planting and growing. We will also look at the changing seasons and how this affects plant life. In Geography we will look at aerial views and land use in Isleham and the surrounding area. We will also use atlases and world maps to locate the continents our food travels from. In History we will look at farming in the past and how it has developed as transport has developed. We will be writing job adverts for farmers, tree poetry, and looking at the features of fairy tales and writing our own.

Our second topic will be Royalty and Castles. This will include our Design and Technology, Geography and History learning and give us plenty to write about, both royal stories and factual writing. We will we working on card construction in Design Technology, to make 3D models of castles. We will test and improve a variety of crafting skills. In History we will look at the features of castles to inform our models and look at the British monarchy including King Richard III, Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. In Geography we will be looking at the regions of the UK and locating their famous castles and will look at and make our own tourist guides. In English we will be writing in a variety of styles over the term including a comparison of two Queens, creating castle stories and royal banquet menus.

Our PSHE focus will be anti-bullying and in RE we will first be looking at the story of Pentecost, followed by finding out about Sikhism. In Art we are looking at the work of Andy Goldsworthy and will be making nature sculptures. P.E. lessons this term will be swimming and athletics.

During the past week we loved our Gruffalo theatre trip and continued our woodland theme by going on a tree identification walk in science. Here are our photos:

This Tuesday we had visitors from Addenbrookes hospital who told us about the history of the hospital and let us experiment with hand hygiene!
World Book Day Costumes - March 2019. Didn't we look great!
In November we had a visitor from the British Antarctic Survey who brought along a kit bag full of explorers things. We really enjoyed trying them on and talking to her about what it would be like to explore the Antarctic. We will continue to look at a variety of real and fictional explorers this half term.
