2022-23 Year 5

Welcome to the Year 5 Class Page for 2022-23

Mrs Gibbs, Miss Eatock, Mrs Goldsack, Miss Carter
We hope everybody has had an amazing Christmas break! We are looking forward to starting 2023, which we will kick off with our Anglo-Saxon and Viking  topic. Find out about what we will be learning in more detail below:
 English:

We will be reading Viking Boy by Tony Bradman as our class novel.  Through this, we will learn about life as a Viking and elements of Norse Mythology.  Guided reading lessons will focus on this book as well as additional non-fiction and poetry texts.  We will write a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry pieces in our writing lessons.  These will include non-chronological reports about dragons, instructions, kenning poems and myths.

We are striving to develop our pupils passion for reading and provide lots of opportunities throughout the school day to listen and read a variety of books. If you would like some book recommendations for reading at home, try exploring https://www.booksfortopics.com/yeargroups.

Maths:

Our Power Maths unit this term will be multiplication and division and will include multiplying a number up to 4 digits by a 1 or 2 digit number, dividing a number up to 4 digits by a 1 digit number, interpreting remainders and problem solving using these skills.

Science:

We have an exciting focus on physics in Science this term.  We will learn about Forces in Spring 1 including gravity, air resistance and friction.  In Spring 2, we will study Earth and Space including planets in our solar system and the sun and moon.
 Art:

We will study and create seascapes using drawing, painting and collage skills.
 History:

We will be investigating the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and will be discovering what happened after the Romans left Britain, what life was like for the settlers and whether the Vikings were really as vicious as people believe!
 PSHE

We will be looking at beginning and belonging in PSHE, with the focus being on exploring new situations and identifying the emotions experienced. We will also be developing  our own networks of support and considering how we can support others.
