I hope everyone enjoyed the Summer break and is looking forward to the start of the Autumn term in Year 3. We want to make sure that you are fully informed so please come and ask if you have any questions or queries or jot something down in the Reading Record. Remember your child needs to bring it into school every day so that messages can be acted upon and reading checked.
This term our topic is 'Rumbles, Rocks, and Romans.'
If you would be interested in offering assistance with other aspects of the curriculum, please contact the school office for further information.
How to help your child in Year 3:
Support your child with daily reading and encourage them by ticking that you have heard/seen them read in their home school book. Don’t forget to add a comment yourself.
Home School books to come into school every day, please.
Spellings can be practised using the Spelling Shed website without the app.
It is also very helpful if you can practice the x3, x4, and x8 times tables. Your child we bring home a password for Times table Rockstars.
Our Year 3 Prayer Space
Prayer spaces enable children and young people, of all faiths and none, to explore life’s questions, spirituality, and faith in a safe, creative, and interactive way.
Our first unit has been following and writing instructions for Roman lollypop catapults and creating Pop Art volcanoe pictures. We will look at a variety of instructions and record the features they need. We will collect verbs and time adverbials. After making our spoon and square-based catapults we will plan and then write our own instructions to go with them. We will include introductions, things we needed, and numbered steps. We will then edit and improve our last set of instructions by changing verbs and by making our sentences longer using 'and' 'but' 'so' or 'because.'
English - Escape from Pompeii
Our narrative unit will be based on the story ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit. Travel back in time to the days of the Roman Empire and join Tranio, the son of an actor, and his friend Livia, the baker's daughter, in witnessing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. Tranio, like most Roman boys, likes to watch whatever is going on: tradesmen selling their goods, ships unloading their exotic cargoes, politicians making speeches in the forum. But one hot August day a very different scene unfolds. The ground begins to shake, the sky to darken. People run gasping for air. Heading for the harbor, Tranio and his friend Livia hide on a boat and witness one of the most terrifying moments in recorded history-the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of their beloved city, Pompeii.
Reading is really important in Year 3. We have lots of different things to read. We have 100s of Beano comics and First News Newspapers. We also have 'Horrible Histories' and 'Horrible Science' magazines. There are also National Geographic Kids issues and 100s of exciting 'Phoenix' stories to jump into. Year 3 also has audio stories to listen to on our mp3 players.
Here are some of the books and their reviews that Year 3 read last year.

Take home one of our class mystery bags. You might find a new author that you like.
In Guided Reading this term we will be looking at non-fiction texts. During the first half term we are looking at 'Earth Shattering Events by Robin Jacobs. This book explores nature at its most destructive. Clear, coherent explanations break down the science behind phenomena including hurricanes, tornadoes, avalanches, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, alongside fascinating facts about the biggest and the worst. Informative, accessible illustrations by Sophie Williams make this so much more than your standard geography book.
After half term, we will be reading 'The Street Beneath My Feet' by Charlotte Guillian. This double-sided foldout book takes you on a fascinating journey deep underground. One side of the foldout shows the ground beneath the city, whilst the reverse side shows the ground beneath the countryside. The underground scenes include tunnels and pipes, creatures' burrows, layers of rock and the planet’s molten core, and run seamlessly into the next. Mixing urban and rural settings, covering subjects such as geology, archaeology, and natural history, The Street Beneath My Feet offers children the opportunity to explore their world through a detailed learning experience.
Our Class reader will be 'Agent Weasel and the Fiendish Fox Gang' by Nick East. Strange things are happening in the United Woodlands. Rabbit warrens have been peppered with itching powder. Squirrels' nuts are missing. Even Badger's bottom has been shaved! All the clues point to the Fiendish Fox Gang.
It's time to call Agent Weasel, woodland super-spy. But before they can even finish their stakeout picnic, Weasel and his trusty dormouse friend Doorkins are captured by the villainous Vixen von Fluff.
Can our heroes escape? Can peace be made in the United Woodlands? Will they get afternoon tea and biscuits? Does Agent Weasel have a clue what's going on?
Maths:
Following our Power Maths scheme, we will start with ‘Place Value within 1000’, before moving on to ‘Addition and Subtraction’. After half term, we will be learning about ‘Multiplication and Division.’
You can watch a short 'how to' guide providing information on how you can help your child understand Place Value below.
Times tables:
Year 3 will be learning about the x3, x4, and x8 times. Your child should have learned the x2, x5, and x10 times tables in Key Stage 1. To help your child become more fluent with their times tables they will bring home a password for the Times table Rockstars app. Watch the video below to learn 10 top tips for Times Tables Rock Stars!
Videos to help your child learn their x3, x4, and x8 times table can be watched below. Try them out.
Science:
In Science, we will be learning about Rocks and their properties. We will be looking at igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. The 'Dr Binocs' clip below explains how these three different rocks are formed. Year 3 will look at and discuss the properties of different rocks. For our first science investigation, Year 3 will investigate 'Which rock would be the best for a Kitchen top?' We will need a rock that would not dissolve, rub off on our hands, or be scratched easily. We will test the different rocks using our fingernails and a pin. We will then record our results in a table and explain what we found out.
After half term, we will be looking at Magnets and Springs. We will be exploring magnets and their properties and investigating which materials are magnetic both inside and outside the classroom.
Art:
In art, we will be looking at and creating our very own mosaics to decorate our classroom. On the move-up day, we made simple sticky foam mosaics. What do you think? We will also look at the work of the artist, Andy Warhol. We will create a volcano pop art picture in a similar style. The video below shows you how to make your own.
Corridor display showing the mosaics Year 3 made on their move-up day.
In Geography we will be learning about the Campania region in Italy. Take a look at this stunning region of Italy in the video below.
We will also be finding out about volcanoes and how Roman Pompeii was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius. Dr Binocs explains how volcanoes work in the clip below.
History:
After half term, we will be looking at the Romans in Britain. We will be finding out why they came from Italy to this cold, damp island. We will also be researching what life was like in Roman Britain and why Boudicca rebelled against Roman rule. Watch the video below to learn how the Romans changed Britain.
Design Technology:
To start the term we will be creating some Roman catapults using elastic bands and a range of materials. Watch the video below to see how we will create our first catapult.
Computing:
We will be using Purple Mash to create our own simple animations using code. Watch a little video below to find out more.
We will also be learning about how to stay safe online. Parents and carers play a key role in supporting children to learn about how to stay safe online.
o Have ongoing conversations with your children about staying safe online
o Use safety tools on social networks and other online services,
o Decide if you want to use parental controls on your home internet
Watch 'Kara and the Smart Crew' which will help teach the SMART rules when online.
Safe Meet Accepting Reliable Tell.
Religious Education:
In R.E this half term we will be asking: How do Christians show that reconciliation with God and others is important? “Reconciliation” is a big word you may hear at church. What does it mean? It’s like when you and a friend get in a big fight and aren’t speaking to one another. When you make things right and become friends again, you are “reconciled” to one another. That’s “reconciliation.” God does that with us too through Jesus Christ. Watch the video clip below.
Beginning and Belonging is our first topic in PSHE and we will be looking at ways to build relationships and cope with new situations.
PE:
This year we will be continuing to use the 'real PE' scheme. The programme is delivered using a holistic approach to develop children's physical, personal, social, and emotional skills.
We are on a mission to get our children more active by developing the fundamental physical skills that are so often overlooked. Our PE lessons are centered around the child to enable them to be successful both in the classroom and in later life.
If you fancy testing out your reaction/response try out the activities in the videos below.
Music:
Mrs. Eatock will be leading Music lessons in Year 3 using the Kapow Music scheme. The children will be learning to tell stories through music. Listening to music and considering the narrative it could represent. Paying close attention to the dynamics, pitch, and tempo and how they change. Creating original compositions to match an animation, building up layers of texture.
Listen to the extract below of 'Night on the bare moutain' by Mussorgsky.
Key questions:
What does the music make you think of?
How does the music make you feel?
Do you like the music?Why/Why not?
What instruments/dynamics/layers can you hear?
What could the story be about?
French:
Mrs Eatock will be teaching French in Year 3. The first unit is called 'Getting to know you.'

Part 2: Cookie Policy
Last Edited: 22nd April 2021
This Cookie Policy explains how eSchools use cookies and similar technologies in our Services. It explains what these technologies are and why we use them, as well as your rights to control their use.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by online service providers in order to (for example) make their websites or services work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.
Cookies set by the website owner or service provider (in this case, eSchools) are called “first party cookies”. Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called “third party cookies”. Third party cookies enable third party features or functionality to be provided on or through the website or service you are using (such as advertising, interactive content and analytics). The third parties that set these third party cookies can recognise your computer both when it visits the website or service in question and also when it visits certain other websites or services.
Why do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?
We use first party and third party cookies for several reasons. Some cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Services to operate, and we refer to these as “essential” cookies. Other cookies enable us and the third parties we work with to track and target the interests of visitors to our Services, and we refer to these as “advertising” or “analytical” cookies. For example, the embedding of YouTube and Vimeo videos, as added by individual schools, will require “advertising” cookies to be enabled in order to successfully play them. Schools that, for example, opt to track visitor data using Google Analytics will require “analytical” cookies to be enabled in order to do so. These third party cookies are used to tailor content and information that we may send or display to you and otherwise personalise your experience while interacting with our Services and to otherwise improve the functionality of the Services we provide. We also enable schools to employ cookies and similar tracking technologies in connection with their use of our Services in order to allow them to track visitors to and interactions with their school website.
How eSchools Uses Cookies
eSchools websites may request cookies to be set on your device. We use cookies to let us know when you visit our websites, how you interact with us and to enrich your user experience. The cookies differ depending on the information. You can adapt your cookie preferences, although please note that blocking some types of cookies may impact your experience on our websites and the services we are able to offer. We will not, without your express consent, supply your personal information to any third party for the purpose of their or any other third party's direct marketing.
User Embedded Content
Our Services allows schools to embed code which may potentially contain cookies. Please note embedded content, if displayed on one of our websites, has been added by the school and not by eSchools. The embedded content added by the school may require additional cookies or tracking technologies to be enabled in order to function.
How can I control cookies?
You have the right to decide whether to accept or reject cookies. Be aware that cookie preferences are set on a per device basis; therefore you may need to set your preferences on each device you use.
Initial cookie pop-up banner: You can exercise preferences about what cookies are served on our Websites by selecting your preference from this modal which appears upon visiting an eSchools website/login screen and dashboard. You can also change your cookie preferences by clicking on the link on the footer of any page. The banner will reappear annually (August 31st to coincide with the academic year) to confirm your settings.
Browser Controls: You can set or amend your web browser controls to accept or refuse cookies. If you choose to reject cookies, you may still use our Websites though your access to some functionality and areas of our Websites may be restricted. As the means by which you can refuse cookies through your web browser controls vary from browser-to-browser, you should visit your browser’s help menu for more information.
Disabling Most Interest Based Advertising: Most advertising networks offer you a way to opt out of Interest Based Advertising. We will not, without your express consent, supply your personal information to any third party for the purpose of their or any other third party's direct marketing. If you would like to find out more information, please visit aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.com.
Mobile Advertising: You can opt out of having your mobile advertising identifiers used for certain types of Interest Based Advertising, by accessing the settings on your Apple or Android mobile device and following the most recent published instructions. We will not, without your express consent, supply your personal information to any third party for the purpose of their or any other third party's direct marketing.
How often will you update this Cookie Statement?
We may update this Cookie Statement from time to time in order to reflect, for example, changes to the cookies we use or for other operational, legal or regulatory reasons. Please therefore re-visit this Cookie Statement regularly to stay informed about our use of cookies and related technologies. The date at the bottom of this Cookie Statement indicates when it was last updated.
Where can I get further information?
If you have any questions about our use of cookies or other technologies, please email us at support@.eschools.co.uk.
