Year 6 Autumn 2023-24

Mrs Gibbs        Miss Sassoli       Mrs Dalton-Cole      Mrs Norbury
Hello everyone, and welcome to Year 6!
This Autumn term, we have lots of exciting learning to be doing! Here's a brief run down of what you can expect:
Maths

We will be following Power Maths a lot of the time. Our topics will be:
- Place Value
- The 4 operations
- Fractions
- Geometry

How can you help at home?
- Times table and division fact knowledge is incredibly important in Year 6. Practise them weekly!
- Practise the 4 operations- column addition, column subtraction, column multiplication and bus stop method division. You can use the weekly arithmetic tests to help with this. We will complete them in school each Monday and will send them home once we've marked them and noted down the scores. Just let us know if you need any help with any of the methods we teach - no question will seem too silly!
English

We are studying Once by Morris Gleitzman, Rose Blanche and the Arrival across the Autumn Term. These books will enable us to produce a wide variety of texts, but the focus will often be on descriptive language.

The text types we will produce include:
Letters
Narrative
Poetry
Explanation texts
Non-chronological reports
Topic

We are studying 'The World at War', in which the focus is World War 2. If you would like to bring in memorabilia or family keep-sakes to share or display in the classroom, feel free!
Science

We have been learning about light in our science lessons. We learnt about:
  • How we see things
  • How light travels
  • Reflection
  • Refraction
  • How to make a rainbow
  • The colour spectrum
We put together all that we have learnt into an engaging, interactive double-page spread which you can see below.
Art and Design Technology

In art, we will be learning to draw things that fly including birds and WW2 planes. We will produce other artwork linked to WW2.

In DT we will create Anderson shelter models out of wood and corrugated card.
Year 6 created these poppies carefully using clay. Once dried, they painted them using acrylic. The finished poppies are stunning. Well done to all.
ICT

We will first be using Purple Mash to complete a coding unit of work which will be challenging and very fun.
Thorpe Woodlands Residential Trip

From 13th-15th September, Year 6 went on an amazing residential trip to Thorpe Woodlands Adventure Centre. Here are some photos of the trip.
Music

This term, Mr Wright will be teaching us how to play the Ukelele. Please remember to bring in your Ukelele each Tuesday for your lessons. We can't wait to share what we learn with you later on in the term!
