We wanted to welcome you all to a new school year. We hope you enjoyed a well deserved summer holiday! We are looking forward to hearing all about your summer breaks and we are so excited about starting the new academic year in Year 2.

Mrs Grove (Monday) and Ms Barnes-Weston (Tuesday-Friday) will be your teachers this year and Mrs Norbury will be your teaching assistant within the classroom. We will be using Class Dojo to share weekly learning and celebrating your achievements.

Please find below the yearly overview for Year 2 and an example of a weekly timetable.  Please note that on occasions lesson will be blocked or swapped around where needed. PE will be on a Tuesday and a Thursday afternoon.

    Year 2 overview 25-26.docx

English:

We will be starting our traditional tales unit at the start of this term. We will explore the story of Little Red Riding Hood, finding the traditional tale features and learning about proper nouns (a noun that names a particular person, place, or thing). We will be collecting adjectives to use in our own retelling of the story. After half term we will be moving onto the topic of The Great Fire of London and the children will be exploring and writing their own diary entry for Samuel Peeps and then moving onto instructional texts.

Maths:

At Isleham we follow the White Rose scheme of work and across the Autumn term we will be covering four units of work, which include numbers to 100, addition and subtraction (two units) and properties of shapes. The overview of the units are shown below and we will be sharing learning weekly on Class Dojo as the units progress.

Science:

In our Science lessons we are going to be learning about materials. We will identify and name materials and consider their properties. We will then use this knowledge to think about why materials may be suitable for their purpose.

Why are windows made from glass and not fabric?

Children will sort materials into criteria and take part in some investigations to answer scientific questions.

Foundation Subjects

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum at Isleham C of E school.  The yearly overview highlights the subjects taught and there will be opportunities of trips and events tied into our areas of learning throughout the year. We will be holding a Year 2 Curriculum information session during the week beginning 9th September where we will talk through the areas taught this term. If you can't make this please see the PowerPoint below which will be uploaded after the event with all the information you need. In geography this term we will be looking at maps in particular a map of Isleham. In history this term we will be learning about the Great Fire of London.

RE

We focus on different faiths in Year 2 and begin the topic with a question to answer that directly relates to a religion. This term we will be focusing on Judaism and Christianity. The children attend a collective worship everyday with a visit from the local Vicar on a Tuesday. To follow up from these sessions the children have a faith focus session that directly relates to the theme from the collective worship sessions. The children also spend an hour on standalone RE lessons a week from the Emmanuel project.

PE

We will be following a new scheme for PE this year. Indoor PE will be following the different units from Real PE, which focuses on building skills and applying these in different ways. We will be following the scheme Get, Set 4 PE for our outdoor PE which works through different skills that include ball skills and will be the first unit we focus on.

PE will be on Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Grove and Thursday afternoon with Ms Barnes-Weston.

How to help your child in Year 2:

Support for reading- Reading every day using the Little Wandle books that will be sent home on a Friday and collected the following Friday.

Rading books to come into school every day, please!

Spellings will be set on a Friday by Ms Barnes-Weston and tested the following Thursday. The spellings will be linked to the Little Wandle phonics scheme.

It is also very helpful if you can practice times tables at home x2. x5. x10. Later in the year your child we bring home a password for Times table Rockstarz which they can play online.

Keep an eye out for posts on this website and also on Class Dojo.
