Computing at our school equips children with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to participate actively and safely in a digital world. We aim to develop learners who can think logically, solve problems creatively and use technology responsibly and effectively. Our Computing curriculum supports pupils in becoming digitally literate and digitally resilient, essential qualities for life in an increasingly connected society.
We follow the Purple Mash Computing Scheme, which provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Year 1 to Year 6, supported by high‑quality teaching resources, activities and assessment opportunities. The scheme includes units focusing on coding, data handling, digital media, computer systems, networks and information technology.
A key feature of the updated programme is the integration of online safety throughout the entire school year, rather than as standalone topics. Online safety objectives are delivered using 2BeSafe – Being Safe in a Digital World, aligned with Education for a Connected World. These short, focused sessions allow pupils to develop age-appropriate understanding of staying safe online, protecting personal information, managing online relationships, recognising risks and knowing where to seek help. Each year group builds on prior learning through clear, progressive objectives across strands such as online bullying, online reputation, privacy, managing online information and digital wellbeing.
Our Computing curriculum includes:
Structured teaching units on core aspects of computer science, information technology and digital literacy
Short, regular online safety sessions using 2BeSafe
Introduction to Purple Mash units for new users in each year group
Additional enrichment units such as micro:bit projects, 3D modelling, AI, blogging and Python (Year 6)
Cross-curricular links with other subjects to embed computing skills in meaningful contexts.
Computing is taught through engaging, practical activities that encourage exploration, creativity and collaboration. Pupils learn to problem-solve, analyse and evaluate digital content, and use a wide range of devices and software to support their learning. As children progress through the school, they develop secure understanding of computational thinking, programming concepts and digital responsibility.
Online Safety Across the Curriculum
Online safety is at the heart of our Computing provision. It is taught:
Explicitly, through regular 2BeSafe sessions
Implicitly, within all Computing units (e.g., email use, blogging, communication tools)
Across the wider curriculum, including PSHE and RSE, where keeping safe online overlaps with healthy relationships and personal safety
Through assemblies, themed events (e.g., Safer Internet Day) and visits
The 2BeSafe programme ensures continuity and breadth of coverage, with age-appropriate learning from Reception to Year 6. Children are taught to recognise risks, seek help, behave respectfully online, manage personal data and critically evaluate information.
Our Aims for Computing
Through our Computing curriculum, we aim to ensure all pupils:
Become confident, competent and creative users of technology
Understand the principles of computer science
Are able to evaluate and apply information technology to solve problems
Develop digital resilience, including knowing how to stay safe and make responsible choices online
Learn to communicate, collaborate and express themselves safely and effectively in a digital environment
Working with Parents and Carers
We recognise the vital role parents and carers play in supporting children’s digital safety. We share information and guidance throughout the year to help families make informed decisions about technology use at home. Parents are encouraged to speak to school should they have concerns about online safety, digital wellbeing or their child’s use of technology. Useful information about online safety is distributed fortnightly through our whole school newsletters.
