Physical Education (PE)

At Isleham Church of England Primary School, Physical Education plays a vital role in supporting children’s physical development, wellbeing and personal growth. We believe that high-quality PE helps children to develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards an active and healthy lifestyle, both now and in the future.

Our PE curriculum is carefully planned to be progressive, inclusive and engaging for all pupils from Reception through to Year 6. Lessons are delivered using a combination of Real PE and Get Set 4 PE, ensuring a strong focus on developing fundamental movement skills, physical competence and positive learning behaviours alongside sport‑specific skills.

PE at Isleham is built around five key learning cogs which are revisited and developed across all year groups:

  • Personal – confidence, resilience and self‑belief
  • Social – teamwork, communication and respect
  • Cognitive – problem‑solving, decision‑making and tactical thinking
  • Creative – expression, imagination and adaptability
  • Physical – agility, balance, coordination and overall fitness

Children experience a broad and balanced PE curriculum including gymnastics, dance, games, ball skills, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities and a wide range of team sports such as football, netball, hockey, rugby, cricket and rounders. Skills and knowledge are built progressively year on year so that pupils develop both competence and enjoyment in physical activity.

Our PE curriculum also places strong emphasis on health and fitness, helping children to understand why physical activity is important for their physical and mental wellbeing. Pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, recognise their own progress and develop a lifelong love of being active.

PE lessons are taught in a supportive and inclusive environment where all children are encouraged to participate and succeed, regardless of ability or prior experience. We promote fair play, cooperation and respect, and celebrate effort as well as achievement.

Through high‑quality PE, enrichment opportunities and links to our wider sporting offer, Isleham Primary School aims to give every child the skills, confidence and motivation to lead a healthy, active and balanced life.
